CIM logistics expert predicts a consolidation of existing trends - and hints at a hidden revolution

2022 heralds a consolidation of ongoing change processes. There are no major technological breakthroughs expected, but leading software providers see an increase in the trend towards fully automated systems.

Due to the problem of labour shortage which has been compounded by the coronavirus pandemic, standard software seems set to become a firmly established part of the WMS landscape. So no big surprises in store. However, 2022 could still be the year that impacts the future of the sector like no year before.

Christmas is a time for giving. This is truer than ever in the run up to Christmas 2021. The majority of charity Christmas markets, benefit events and fundraising galas in Germany have been cancelled due to the coronavirus, shrinking the coffers of many aid organisations. Wema-Home e.V. is a small charity in Munich which initiates and supports development aid projects in Benin, West Africa. CIM has been a regular donator for the past several years.

Modern software = standard software

Technology & Innovation

The concept of standard software is in danger of being forgotten in an age of readily available apps.

Software was distributed and installed on data carriers a decade ago, whereas today’s computer programs are downloaded almost exclusively from the Internet. And very few modern software applications are limited to a single platform.

Technology & Innovation

PROLAG®World Production has seen significant innovation since release 3.1.7. Orders can now be marked as ‘repair orders’ in the system. Repair orders are orders in which stock (raw material items) can be used to repair other stock (finished parts) which is already available in the warehouse, and which is then put into storage as new stock. Repair orders are created manually or transferred from the host.

Money and software – cost savings with standard software
Money and software – cost savings with standard software

Technology & Innovation

Money has always played a peculiar role in the software sector. The industry was shaped by the hacker culture with its far-left political orientation, which did not see the concept of ‘ownership’ as a necessary part of the digital future. Well into the 2000s, large parts of the population still believed that software was not something you should have to pay for. This heightened the popularity of illegal file-sharing networks for trading computer programs and other intellectual property. Ethical issues around ownership in the IT sector continue to dominate political discourse – from intellectual property right through to user privacy and cyber sovereignty.
