The company plays a pivotal role in driving the energy transition, actively contributing to the creation of a sustainable future for people everywhere.

Initial situation

In its search for a suitable warehouse management provider, Memodo received invaluable support from the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML). Together with Fraunhofer experts, a comprehensive requirements analysis was conducted, allowing Memodo to clearly define their specific needs and objectives for a warehouse logistics system.

Following this detailed evaluation, the company chose PROLAG World for its ability to meet these requirements and ensure efficient warehouse logistics well into the future. At the start of the project, Memodo’s warehouse logistics centred on sites in Augsburg, Erding and Haag an der Amper, with plans to expand to an additional location in Northern Germany.

The three logistics centres in Southern Germany had previously relied on an warehouse management system developed in-house. However, given Memodo’s rapid growth in recent years, the existing software had reached its capacity limits and required replacement with a more robust and scalable solution. Together, these three sites span approximately 30,000 square metres of warehouse space, incorporating high-bay storage, small parts and block storage areas. Memodo manages an extensive inventory of around 7,000 different articles, ranging from small accessories and photovoltaic systems to class 9 hazardous materials and large-scale profile rail systems.

Goals

By implementing PROLAG World, Memodo aimed to optimize intralogistics processes, boost efficiency and productivity and reduce storage costs. The plan was to deploy the software at the three Southern German sites within six months, followed by a rollout at the logistics centre in Unna. Key customer requirements included efficient warehouse management through cross-logistics centre order management, automated order processing and secure workflows. Intelligent storage strategies and ABC analyses were to be used to optimize space utilization, while improvements in picking, packing and shipping processes were also a major focus. As a fully integrated inventory management system, the new warehouse software was additionally expected to streamline inventory processes and effectively manage stock held by external service providers.

Outcome

The first iteration project iteration, involving the implementation of PROLAG World at the sites in Augsburg, Erding and Haag, was completed in just 5 months – from project kickoff to go-live.

The system supports an end-to-end logistics chain, from goods receipt to the loading process. Using mobile workstations at the browser-based I-point, Memodo records received items directly at the set-down point. PROLAG World then automatically determines the optimal storage location, applying multiple putaway strategies to ensure efficiency.

Forklift operators receive prioritized putaway and picking orders on their mobile devices. By scanning the barcodes on the load units as well as the location barcodes, the system ensures that the correct goods are moved at all times, maintaining accuracy throughout the process.

New orders automatically reserve goods in the warehouse at defined intervals, and replenishment processes are triggered to transfer stock to the picking zone.

After picking, the goods are correctly packed at the packing area using PROLAG World and moved to the dispatch area where they are loaded onto vehicles for transportation. Thanks to an integrated dashboard, employees in the control centre can continuously monitor progress and identify potential bottlenecks in the warehouse using real-time metrics, enabling them to take swift action when needed.

Between 600 and 700 orders are now delivered daily, with up to 900 putaways and 4,000 to 7,000 booking transactions

Optimized data flow for efficient logistics processes

Interfaces with shipping service providers DACHSER SE, Noerpel SE and GLS, as well as Memodo’s in-house ERP system, guarantee smooth, cross-system data flows. Photos of packed or unpacked shipments are transmitted to the ERP system to enhance the returns process and improve overall efficiency. In addition to implementing processes from the PROLAG World standard suite, such as cross-logistics centre order management, order-triggered replenishment and multi-order picking, processes from the previous system were also retained and integrated. Multiple serial numbers can be captured in a single work step using a multi-scan feature, for example. And an additional logistics centre was created to map the inventory stored at external service providers.

Automated logistics and inventory monitoring in Unna

As part of the second iteration, the site in Unna site was implemented along with a host of additional functionalities. Based on the experience gathered from the first iteration, the team at Memodo was able to take over large parts of the the warehouse generation independently. A key component of this phase was the creation of a set of rules that enabled delivery orders to be automatically assigned to logistics centres in either Northern or Southern Germany, depending on the recipient’s address. This ensures that the shortest routes to the customer are chosen, saving both time and costs. Further enhancements were made in the packing area: The system now checks whether small parts can be added to pallets that are theoretically already full, helping to save on transportation and shipping costs. Additionally, stock transfers between logistics centres can now be reliably tracked and managed in PROLAG World, ensuring full transparency and traceability. When goods are issued from an external warehouse, PROLAG World automatically creates a purchase order in the relevant logistics centre, enabling the goods to be received back. Thanks to the continuous inventory system in PROLAG World, Memodo can perform real-time stock control, ensuring accurate and up-to-date inventory management.

Increased efficiency: Up to 700 orders a day with PROLAG World

PROLAG World has taken warehouse management at Memodo to a new level, resulting in substantial improvements across their logistics processes in terms of both efficiency and transparency. Between 600 and 700 orders can now be delivered daily, with up to 900 putaways and 4,000 to 7,000 booking transactions. As many as 100 employees can work simultaneously with PROLAG World or the PROLAG Go mobile app, using a web browser or scanner. PROLAG World has taken warehouse management at Memodo to a new level, leading to significant improvements across their logistics processes in terms of both efficiency and transparency.

Building on the successful roll-out of PROLAG World in Germany, Memodo is planning to implement CIM’s standard software at a further site in the Czech Republic.
