Fraunhofer IML publishes new book in cooperation with CIM GmbH

The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML has published a new book on the topic of process optimization in intralogistics. CIM made a valuable contribution to the book with an interesting practice-based article on ‘Artificial intelligence in WMS’. The book provides a roadmap for increasing efficiency in intralogistics. Following the motto “think big, start small”, it focuses on methods and mindsets for achieving big goals with small steps and developing them slowly but consistently.

Over 50% of companies plan to optimize their processes using artificial intelligence (AI) and invest in digitalization. AI is revolutionizing intralogistics by optimizing processes, boosting efficiency and reducing costs. By using algorithms and machine learning, inventories can be managed more effectively, routes optimized and delivery times shortened. The Fraunhofer Institute published a new book in March 2024 entitled “Process Optimization in Intralogistics”. CIM GmbH contributed an article on “Artificial intelligence in WMS – a look into the future of intralogistics management”.

Long-term cooperation with interesting results

In a two-year collaboration, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and CIM examined the impact of technology on process optimization in intralogistics and conducted feasibility studies using realistic customer data. The challenges of a real-life project were examined, as well as which logistics companies are most likely to benefit from AI in the future. The collaboration started in 2021 in partnership with the Chair of Materials Handling, Material Flow, Logistics at the TUM School of Engineering and Design. The objective was to design self-learning software capable of independently generating intelligent storage strategies on the basis of neural networks. Self-learning generative software based on neural networks has played a fundamental role in the logistics sector for a number of years now, both in expert panels and in research. The practical application of AI in intralogistics for the most part relates to warehouse automation such as AI image recognition, picking robots or driverless transport systems. CIM GmbH enabled the first testing of AI in real-world intralogistics management conditions through this collaboration. Hannelore Mayr, a member of the management board at CIM, was instrumental in initiating and implementing the project.

The outcome – an engaging and insightful book

The book provides a roadmap for increasing efficiency in intralogistics. Following the motto “think big, start small”, it focuses on methods and mindsets for achieving big goals with small steps and developing them slowly but consistently. A total of nine practice-based articles, including the one contributed by CIM GmbH, show how other companies are already following this path. The focus is on applications of methods for process mapping, optimization potential with derivatives, but also how logistics IT and AI are used in intralogistics processes. CIM’s article specifically highlights how to speed up goods issue through intelligent storage.
